450r or 400ex or ltz400

So I'm just getting into the sceen and am a little lost. I have been reading for only about a week and i cant figure out what kinda quad i should get for both me and my old lady.
Im a 6'3" 220lb guy and my wife is a 5'5" 150lbs. So i was thinking about the 450r for me and the 400ex for her.(mind you this will be our first time on a bike for the both of us.) Now ive read both sides for the 450r saying its a terrible trail machine(which is what my wife wants) or that its a GREAT trail machine so long as your know how to clutch and/or moderate the throttle. I also hear that the 450r is about as fun as it gets on the straights(which is what i really wanna do.)
Now its pretty much unanimus(sp?) that the 400ex is an ideal starter quad for trails, so im not soooo much confused about that one, other then a lot of ppls recomend the ltz400 over the 400ex. I soppose we will infact do a lot of trail riding because the wife lets me get away with a lot, so a lot of us getting into quads is for her. But you better belive ill take my quad which ever it is to the dunes or something where i can open it up! it just may not be as often as say the trails. To wrap things up, im asking what all of you recomend?
Please bare in mind that im a first time rider, and for referance i live in Suprise AZ which is about 2 hours from the dunes and about 1.5 hours to anywhere else. thx for the advice!!!

get her the 400ex hands down great trail bike has good power for a beginner and can be modded to make more if you want it to be.. great balance also.. 4 you i wouldnt go with the 450r you are a big guy whos probably going to feel alittle cramped up on that bike i would say you fit really well on a Ds 650.. yes they are big bikes and tall.. but there wide and the suspention stock iz pretty good! and they have Tons of power throughout the gears.... the best trail bike i dont know... never took one in the trails i have known people that have riden them in the trails and they like them... But if you didnt like that you could go with a kfx 700.. but there automatic i dont know if you like that or not.. there a power plant also.. plenty of tourqe.. so you choose now... Do you feel comfortable on a 450r? if you do i recomend a 400z there great great bikes plenty of power..

Hello GIJoeDriver and welcome to the forums. I'm 6'3, 205 lbs, riding since I was 5, and have much experience on all of these, even owned a few 400ex's and Z400's.
For your wife you have the right idea, a 400ex, that is what I have for mine and I still have fun on it too. They are a great all around machine and will be the most reliable machine you can buy and not worry about much maintnance.
For the trails here where I am from, I would rather have the Z400. It is well balanced and a lot like a 400ex, just more performance oriented. BUT, when I think of Arizona trails I think of more open area's, so a 450R just might be the way to go. If you think you can keep yourself from baja'ing and going crazy until you get some seat time, you might want to go ahead and get the 450R if you ride in open area's. Just make sure to keep fresh oil in it and the air filter clean!

Quick Question for someone who knows:
I'm looking at this 2004 Honda TRX400EX in a classified ad and was wondering if it has a reverse gear? If not, is that the only difference with a 2005?
thanks in advance...

Thanks for the advice guys! Yeah, in the end for me, i will definatly be more performance oriented. And from what i read the damn zuki seems to edge the honda out :*( As for the 450r, i dont know if ide be able to contain myself, and thats no exaderation. Ive always wanted to push the envolope and push it asap.
So call it OCD or what ever, but im all about brand loyalty, and cant see myself getting a honda and a zuki, it would have to be either or. So i see its unanimus, the 400ex is a good choise for the ole'lady, but how about a z400? if its just a little more proformance oriented then is it that big of a deal? and the same with the 400ex for me, if its say... a toss-up between reliability and a sliver of performance then it wount matter to me so much.

I have a 450r that I bumped to a 480 with port and polish and a stage II Hotcam.
I bought my wife a 400ex, up from a 250ex, last year.
I know that z400 out performs the 400ex but I love the reliability of the Hondas.
My wife test road both the KFX400 and the DVX400 (both Suzuki Z400's with different plastic) and she really liked the feel of the Honda better.
I ride both dunes and trail with my R, real tight trails at times and I think it is a great trail quad even without reverse or electric start.
Honda has proven to be so reliable I can't see ever getting anything else.
