I think the big bear is a 5 speed manual with an automatic clutch. Its also air cooled and carburated. The king quad is liquid cooled with an aoutomatic CVT trans with EFI, similar set up to the 500 EFI polaris. So they are completly different animals. I know the big bear 400 motor is bullet proof and if I were looking for a foot shift that would be the machine with the stock ITP mud lites. I think the Big bear would be a fun rock crawling/mudding machine. Ridden alot of big bear 350s and 400s and the kodiak 400 when it used to be an air cooled manual. Fun but not the fastest. The new king quad 450 has a good write up in QUAD magazine.

I have not seen any reliability issues with the 06 sp 500 EFIs, I have read about some, but I do believe the 07s would be a better choice simply because they would have been able to work out any issues.

a few other choices to look at would be the
Grizzly 450
Can Am outlander 400
I was in the same boat as you. I saw all the reviews and each had they own ups and downs. I finally came down to the 2 I listed above out of 5(3 you listed). I went with the Can Am since they have a 3 year warranty and the power from their 400 was pretty good. The ride was awesome also.
either one you pick you will be happy with.. If you can, try riding a can am before buying one.. goodluck and let us know which you go with
