Default 04 kfx 700 backfiring and throttle response slow???

I just bought a KFX 700 from a friend and it runs great when riding, but when you start it, it runs a little rough and sometimes backfires when letting of the gas. Do you think I need new plugs? He changed the oil and filter on it but I don't think that he ever did anything else to it. Also, the battery seems weak when starting, would it help to charge it or would it need a new one. I am new to the atv world... Thanks.

Do you use the choke when you first fire it up? If you dont it would make start up a little rough and it could very well need spark plugs its probably about time do you know about how many hours are on it? well good luck and be safe. if you have questions about the v or want to do any mods go to www.700v.com

Backfiring during decel is usually due to 2 reasons:
1). Unburned fuel igniting by hot temp in the exhaust system.
2). Leak in the intake sysytem (extra oxygen).
Think about those 2 things and check your quad accordingly.

Install a Tiny-Tach to tract engine hours on a KFX700. And check/adjust valves about every 50 hours on Kawi's V-twin quad engines. Typically, when valves become too tight, it would not start easily when engine is hot. And of course there would be a rattling noise as well. Good idea to check/adjust if you got it used. It's relatively easier on KFX compared to BF or Prairie - a lot easier access to the valve covers.

Thanks for the help guys. Today I did some cleaning and painting on the atv. I painted the exhaust pipe and used an SOS pad on the engine and other grey metals to get the orange color from the mud off of it. Is there an easier way to clean this, it is very hard to get to all the parts to clean them??? Also, can I check the valves myself or should I take it in to the dealer? If I take it in what would be a good price to check the valves and what else should I get them to check? Oh yeah, I also changed my spark plugs today and they were pretty black. Does this mean it is running rich or do they look like that after 3 years? Thanks.

Well for one thing i dont have that orange color mud where i am so it would be hard to say maybe some engine cleaner that u can get for a car,,,on the Valves u can go to the site that bang bang said and look at it to see if u think u can do it your self...3 years on the plugs ,,i would just ride it for 2 or 3 weeks and take a look at them then and see what they look like .,.,then take it form there,,,,,But i would think about a new belt ,,if he road it alot its going to need one sooner or later,,,and u dont want to be some where riding when it goes...u can take the cover off to see what its looking like ...

Can you do the valve adj by yourself?
Technically it is not difficult at all and no real special tool is needed. I am sure you have feeler gauge and 10 mm box/open combo wrench. You will need a service manual which is the best investment for your quad IMO.
I would charge no more than $80 for valve adj on KFX.

The guy I bought the atv from actually had an extra belt for it, so I have one. I saw on the 700v website that the belt isn't that big of a deal to put on. But, do you have to have a special tool for it? (clutch pull or something) If I need that tool how much is it or would it be cheaper to have someone else put it on? Thanks.

Belt Change:

1). Drive pulley (movable sheave) needs to be removed using Kawi's special tool - Puller which is just a modified bolt and sells for something like $67 !!!
I've seen some strong guys doing R&R the belt with bare hands. When I tried last time, I couldn't do it.

2). After installing the new belt, the belt deflection should be checked and should be closer to the lower limit which will give you the longer belt service life, higher top speed and better acceleration. Again the service manual would be a great help.
