Start Button/KEY START.....Polaris
#1
My co-worker was telling me that his 98 or 99 S.P. 500 has the start button to push and is freezing up on him up here in Canada. Night time lows hit around -30 C. Anyway my question is my 2006 S.P. 450 has the key to turn and start.....When did they start using this and is it on all Polaris models now.....How do you start YOUR quad .....PUSH BUTTON or KEY START.
Does anybody else have a problem with the Push button?
Did Polaris change this due to problems ...and went to the KEY SWITCH to start the Quad?
....................Thanks ....Caper...............

Yes it does get wet...Also he said it's left outside...No Garage I guess.....He pulls the cord now to start it....It (the button) will stick in and keep the starter engaged.........Caper...........
I told him I start mine with the key switch.......He thought that was great to have....instead of the push button. I think we just over look some of the changes made over the years and take them for granted....
When Polaris makes a change ,Hopefully there is a reason why...Like in this case...Caper......

Caper, if it's freezing then lock de-icer will fix it up. However it is usually mud/dirt that works itself into the housing; take it apart, clean it up and reassemble.
All polaris quads 2002 and later use a key start; just one more item where Polaris is ahead of the other manufacturers.

One I can probably guess that still doesn't is the Predator. My 03 Predator had a key for ignition, and a start button, and I don't see any reason for changing it. Sport quads tend to have push button start or kick start. As far as the Sportsman line goes, it was all key start since 02.

I ride my 2001 SP500 in the snow and it gets wet and it is fine. It also sits in a un heated shed with no insulation and it seems to be fine. If wost comes to worst pull start it. Mine has a new top end in it with only a couple of hours on it so pull starting can be a bugger sometimes.

my 94 model has opposite problem, ie heat/salt induced corrosion
I need to turn key to vertical and then push button and as long as green light is on it will normally start first try
problem is it sometimes takes 5 or more on-off of the key for green light to come on
have same problem with car and it's all to do with hi temp/humidity and close to sea
but looks like messy job to fix on both car and Polaris so I just flick it a few times till I get a light, but I know both will finally fail and force me to operate
