I have the '07 model and in the instructions it states twice that to select bettween 2x4 and 4x4 you need to stop. It is not meant to be an 'on the fly system'. I subsequently asked on this list why this was and got a few responses but it seems that you have to be travelling under 10 km per hour for it to switch w/o causing damage.

i was told the same thing. The 4x4 isn't an on the fly system so in order not to do damage it is best to stop before switching to or from.

It is "on-the-fly" system, but not at very high speed flys. You can flip the 4x4 switch any time you want but the system would only switch when the speed is between 0.5 and 12 mph. It is governed electronically and there is nothing you can do to change. However, slower the quad speed better for your front diff gears though - less wear and tear.
