I was prepping my bike for the 05 headlight mod, and took the oil tank off again. I quickly noticed this.....

hole in filler neck weld

could this be the culprit?

link to my ds spewing oil original thread

do you think that is enough for it to spew oil all down the tank, and all over the plastics? is it low enough on the tank to have constant oil pressure, to blow it out the tank like that?

can I get it welded, or do I need a new tank?

what do you guys think???

well one thing you could do to test it is pressure test it by putting it in water but not up to where you put oil in and cap the other holes off and see where the airbubbles come from and if that is the culprit which it most likely is then I would get it welded...or just weld it so you don't have to drain water out of the oil tank and you will save yourself some money.

DON'T SUBMERGE YOUR TANK!!!!!!!!!!!! put your dipstick back in. plug off all the lines but 1. set your air compressor regulator to 4psi and preasureize the tank. (don't over preasure as it will bust the tank, spray with soap, fill the tank, repeat) take some Dawn dish soap in a spray bottle(50/50 with water) and spray the area.... this will bubble if it is leaking. take it to a weld shop or yourself and weld the leak. this is the way i check tanks after i weld them. if you get water inside you tank you will be SCREWED. water is a poor lubricant and will take a long time to get out of your syatem once it is there.

Hence the reason I said so you don't have to get the water out because it will be hard to get water out of the oil system...but If you do what kaylas daddy said make sure that everything else is sealed up good like the filler kneck that way you can see that you are loosing pressure at that sertain spot.

I agree do not get water into the tank it is a bear to get out.
Seal the unit and presurize it just as the fellow said. Spray soapy water or a wet soaped up paper towel in the suspected area. if it is made of steel.
One think! Brazing it would be a better approach because I think the parts produced to make the tank are either pressed and folded and/or brazed together, Or Silver soldered. Best fillers for pin holes.

If it is weld will not work over brazed areas! Snap crackle and pops, you will have a mess.

Any Radiator shop can tell you this! You may have to repaint the unit too.

IF it is made of aluminum then welding it is the better option.

I rolled mine on the first ride i had it.Bent the fill tube and it cracked at the base.
What was suggested to me was clean the area well and use jb weld on it.Iv had
it like that for 3 yrs now and no problems.
It doesnt take much oil to give the appearence of a bad leak.Have you had to
add a lot of oil to keep it at the right amount?
