2-strokes use tranny oil, and for the engine the oil is mixed in the gas or is injected directly.
and to let you know the XR200 was a 4 stroke and did use engine oil.............

Just like most 4-storkes out there, your 400EX engine and trans SHARE THE SAME OIL, just like in that XR does! (Wow, you have been runing trans oil in the XR, tell us just how well did that go????) So, you need to pick an "engine" oil that has additives that allow it to stand up to the stress of a transmission, and that isn't any "car" or "diesel" oil, but it isn't "transmission" oil either.
Pick a motorcycle specific oil that is API SG/JASO MA. The SG insures that it has high pressure additives for your transmission and cams, and the MA insures that it is compatible with your wet clutch. Beyond that, pick a synthetic if you are willing to spend the extra money.
I really like Maxima's products! http://www.maximausa.com/ Their Premium is an economically priced petroleum oil. They also have an intermediate priced synthetic/petroleum blend, and my favorite Extra which is full synthetic ester based (but more pricey).
In New York you will probably want to run 10W40 most of the year, but 10W30 in the cooler months or even 5W30 if you ride in very cold weather.

Why "believe it or not", with the GN4???? If you read the owner's manual, it is one of the oils that Honda specs for the 400EX. I would personally remommend Honda's HP4 (without moly) over GN4, because it is a synthetic blend and will stand up better under extreme conditions.
