Default Rubicon transmission concern

My 2005 Rubicon has 400 miles on it. It has been used primarily to push snow. I've noticed that about one time in a hundred, when I shift from reverse to forward, it will make a single "popping" noise coming from the transmission. It's like it pops out of gear. Then it will catch and act perfectly fine. This doesn't happed often, just once in while. I would like to fix whatever it is before I have to buy a new transmission. Does anyone think that this might just simply be a linkage adjustment issue?

Thanks for your reply. One little problem though, I am not a mechanic so I'm not exactly sure what you are telling me. "Gears meshing" sounds like a very bad thing to happen inside the sub-transmission. How do I make it stop doing that? It feels relatively violent when it makes that noise (and potentially expensive). The whole machine jumps. It will take off going forward, stop, makes the "pop" noise, the machine jumps, and then it goes forward like nothing happened.

It means they are fitting into each other like they should.

Could it be idling too fast?

Ok, now that I understand what "meshing" is... I could see that if it made the noise immediately before I started moving. But why would it do after it has already moved a couple of feet. It's feels like I would imagine it would feel if I floored it, got moving and then physically forced the transmission into neutral and then immediately crammed it right back into Drive. It happens so fast that I can't get out of the throttle before it slams back into gear...hence the "bang" noise.

Could also be something internal? Under "Jumps out of gear" the service manual lists worn gear dogs, worn gear shifter groove, bent shift fork shaft...

If you have a dealership with a competent service department nearby, it might be time to let them at least look at it.

I think that sounds like a good idea. I appreciate your input.
