fallow the the cables that go from the fan there are 4 in total 2 go to the power suply and 2 go to the thermostat housing. my fan stopped working once it was the thermostat sensor it went bad after i drove my bike thru some salt water.

the fan siwtch is on the back of the thermostat housing - its the sensor with two wires connected to it by spade connectors. if you use a paperclip as mentioned, or a jumper made up of two male terminals and a short piece of wire, the fan should come on. if it does then the fan is okay. if the fan is never coming on and you are overheating as a result, but you know its okay because of the check described, then the fan switch is culprit. they cost about $20 from dealer.
the other sensor on the thermostat housing that only has one wire coming out of it is only for the red light and has nothing to do with fan operation, it simply make sthe red light come on if you overheat.
the fan has only one control device, it is simply a switch activated by temperature, there is no relay activated by a coil for it. the only relays on the bike is the starter solenoid and a relay for the auxiliairy baja lights if its a baja model.
