5 sp. shifter ideas
#1
Does anyone have any ideas for replacing the heel-toe shifter with just a standard toe shifter on a AC 400 w/ 5 speed? My Arctic Cat dealer says they do not offer anything from the factory to replace the original shifter. I could make one myself, but I thought I would see if anything is available aftermarket first.
Thanks.
Thanks.

There used to be a factory accessory toe shifter for the older models. I would suspect you could adapr that. Part # 0436-239, it worked on the '03 500 and '96 theu '02 400, 454 and 500 manual shift models. You might have to cut and weld on your present shift, but if you want a toe shift, like I did when I got my first Cat, but a month later I didn't care enough to change it and I'm into the second cat a couple of thousand miles and still don't see the need for it.

my 06 500 shifter is 2 piece. If I don't want the heel part, I can take it off and ajust the toe higher to fit my foot. I thought I would do this when I bought it, but it turns out I like the heel shifter now. Yours should be the same..2pc

I find the heel toe shifter handy when riding with large boot on, like in winter, as it is easier to get my foot on top of rather than under the shift lever with big boots.
I thought I would change mine out as well until I rode it. Now I like it and not the regular ones.

when i had my first cat which was a 2000 model 300 i didn't like the rocker shifter, i adjusted it so it was tilted forward so it was easier to downshift then i started liking it more and more. how much time do you have on this rocker shifter? you might get used to it. also i have a suzuki fourwheeler that has a hand shifter on it. all it is, is a handle welded onto the shifter so i can use the hand or the foot. works great when i am in deeper water and mud so that is an idea.

Thanks for all the replies. My dealer claims that neither the older toe shifter p/n (in Bear's msg.) nor the newer 2 pc. shifter will work on my machine. I figure one of them ought to work, but I haven't had time to really dig into it myself, so I am just living with the original shifter for now. I still get "crossed-up" so to speak when looking for the right gear from time to time, but I guess that will get better with more time on the machine.
It originally came with 26" Mud Lites, but they rode too rough on hard surfaces and tore up the grass around my house, so I found a set of new stock (Goodyear) take-offs at the dealer for it. But I put the Mud Lites back on when I went trail riding in some rough country last week, and I swear that thing will climb straight up a wall in Low range with them things on. So far I am very impressed with the machine, especially the ground clearance and FIS. I am the only person I know that owns an AC, but I think I am making some converts out of some of my friends.

You get used to the shifter, then get to like it. When I got my 500 back in 2002, I kept hitting a lower gear instead of a higher one. After a few rides, I quit making mistakes, and after riding a couple of other quads with heavy boots on, I really missed it.
