In the 2006 owners manual it says the Sportsman 450 replaced the 400 . So they are no longer made, but one more thing to note here is the 400 lacks a bit of speed for the actual size of it !!!!...So they may be under-powered abit........You should really find out from someone that has one though........I can only tell you about the 450 and can't do a comparrison on the two.......
For you info only the new S.P. 450 improvements listed by Polaris are:
More H.P. than 400 A 15% increase.
Higher top speed than the 400 a 10% increase.
Better acceleration than the 400 a 30% increase to 30 MPH.
Overall bigger and better.
I know I am comparing a 400 to a 450 but I think Polaris knew these were under-powered and needed to due something to improve that!!!!!!!..That is mine take.......The 400 was around for awhile and should be very dependable though!!!!!.........Good luck.......Hope someone replies back that has one ......Caper...

the Sportsman 400L is a two stroke with straight axle...These are good atv"s but do not have the ride of the Sportsman's with independent suspension...They are very fast though..We have a couple of them who ride with us...3100 miles is not a lot of miles...
