about a cup of milky oil in the bottom of a DS oil bag
#1
was taking apart a ds today and when I was draining the oil from the oil bag about the first cup of oil was milky and then the other 95% looked perfectly normal. as you know I have never really messed with the ds motor. do these thing sblow headgaskets? has anyone ever noticed some moisture in the bag ? has been sitting a while and even sat outside through the rainy season . could this just be condensation?

By bag I am guessing you mean oil tank? I would say if it sat outside it is just moisture and rain water. Because if it ran with water in the oil the whole motor and oil tank would be milky. Since you got a little bit of water first and then oil, sounds to me like rain water and condensation. When you drained the oil from the motor what did the oil look like?...

I am guessing that is what he is saying also...It would either be the rain water or coolant, but if there only seems to be a little and none of the milky oil in the enigne itself just in the tank I would say it is rain water...If you have a good amount I would say your gasket has gone back and is causing coolant to get in, but how you described it I would agree with amd.

Damn SST, how old is that pig you're working on anyway? They converted from a bag to a steel tank round about 7 years ago. That old goat bladder oil bag was pretty durable though, and was transparent enough that you didn't have to stick a fire place poker in it to check your oil level like you do now.

ok funny guys , what if I said that bombardier lists this oil tank as an oil "bag"???

if it is coolant, then it is most likely the water pump seals rather than the head gasket. it is rare to get coolant in the oil from a head gasket failure - symptoms of head gasket failure is combustion pressure leaking into the cooling system and purging coolant from expansion tank overflow - the head gasket would have to blow in exactly the right spot for coolant to get in oil, as there is only one small oil port going up thru the jug to the head. waterpump seals going bad are very common.

Sheesh Gregg, chill my Brother. I was just trying to loosen the load a little. If you pop on over to OnDunes you'll see my prediciment with the whole motor swap thing I've got going on. I wish it were as easy as a swap but i'm having to rob Peter to pay Paul and all the while do a high comp piston, some cams and a few other little things that are just kicking my tail. Just trying to bring a smile in a period of frustration.
But to answer your question in a serious manner, on one of the 01's that I had I did the oil change one time and when I drained it it looked like a Starbucks Mocha Frappichino. Checked coolant levels and everything else that I could imagine causing moisture to enter the case. Nothing out of the ordinary. Was very concerned but continued on anyway as if all was normal. Still to this day it has not repeated that issue and is running fine. Been on HP4 since day one. Still scratch my head over it but all is well.
