P700 vs. Grizzly 700
#1
Okay guys. I got outran on my Prairie 700 this past weekend by a new Grizzly 700. We were racing on a fine gravel road and I spun like hell for a solid 30 feet....he didn't spin much at all. He just kept pulling. It was closer when we ran in 4WD, but, he still started pulling me on the big end. Both Bikes are stock, except I have Terra Cross tires mounted on ITP C-Series Limited wheels. I plan on putting the factory tires and wheels back on to lighten it up some and drag him on asphalt. Is there anything else I can do that's not too radical to get the upper hand? OR am I wasting my time and should I except defeat? I've had to hear A LOT of mouth about this from another Grizzly 660 owner, so I would like to shut him up, apparently he's been waiting for this Yamaha victory since he's been getting outran by my Brother's P650 and my P700.
Help would be greatly appreciated.

no, the P700 should be able to whup the grizz. your Terracross tires are slowing you and you are loosing traction. (how much pressure are you running in them, anyway)
i think you will get him on the pavement without too much effort if you put your stock tires on.

I was running too much air pressure the first race, 7 lbs, however, I backed it off to 2 lbs and it was a closer start the next race. But, I still spun like crazy and he pulled me several bike lengths, I'm guessing 5 - 7 bikes. He really didn't spin hardly any compared to me. When we went back to the starting line, I had spun a solid 30 feet and he spun maybe 10 feet. Also, he pulls off at about 100 yds. As for how my bike is running, to me it runs great, no hesitation, pulls the front wheels in Hi on ground that it hooks up on and I've had it up to 67 mph (by the speedo) on pavement with stock tires and wheels.

Yes, it sounds like just a traction issue to me .I used to have a p650 and they do spin alot on take off. Also the Grizz 700 has a smoother take off which is helping him, the more I think about it ,I think you both will top out around the same ,I still believe you will get the take off on pavement though.Good luck keep us posted.

Redemption time....sort of. This past weekend my brother and several friends went to WVA to ride some trails, I didn't go. As luck would have it, the guy who has the Grizzly 700 who outran me in gravel was there. My brother has a P650 and yes it has jets and a DG snorkel, he raced the Grizzly 700 and a King Quad 700 on asphalt for about 100 yds and he outran both of them by about a bike. He raced the Grizzly 700 again and the result was the same. I feel redeemed since I can out run my brothers bike by several bike lengths with my P700 which is bone stock. The other guy that has the REALLY BIG MOUTH that rides a Grizzly 660 was making excuses right off the bat about the jet kit and dg-snorkel. He shut up when my brother reminded him he was at a 53cc disadvantage not mention outweighed the other rider by about 50 pounds, plus has the additional weight from a Warn wench.
Thanks Big Bro!

This is going to be a very close race on paper.
Grizz 700
45.6hp
600lbs
P700
46 - 48.6 hp
604lbs
With the numbers being this close, its going to be a drivers race. The driver's weight will also play a big factor.

I should outrun him. When we ran on gravel, I spun about 30 feet....he spun about 10 feet....if that. I really think that's why he out ran me when we ran. If my brother can outrun him on asphalt by at least a bike with his P650 (see 5/29 post), I will out run him handly on asphalt with my P700. I can out run my brothers P650 out of the hole by about 5-6 bike lengths in 100 yds.....easily. There were a lot of factors coming into play when we raced on the gravel. The Prairie V-Twins have a lot more bottom end than the Grizzly, and the Grizzly independent rear end gets better traction....it just squats down while I'm fish tailing in the gravel.
