I'am New and need advice

First off Thanks for your time and second I'am going to get into 4 Wheeling so I got a couple or a lot of questions for ya. I have little ranchers but that's it and I am wanting to get something that will be dune worthy and have some power. So I have been searching and reading and I been looking at 3 different kinds a Polaris predator a Yamaha raptor 700 and the ds 650. Now I would rather stick with one dealer which is a brp dealer. That is why the ds650 really interests me. So I want a quad that will be VERY reliable and still have tons of power and enough to go anywhere at the dunes. The concern that I have with the ds 650 baja is the reliability is it built tough and is it dune worthy? I want something that I can run all day and not see a problem and be able to stay up with the buddies quads. Now I have seen some place that they had a problem with the battery recharging or something & something about the chain bearing I think. So will this ds650 outperform or stay up with a yfz 450, an predators? And has BRP worked the little bugs out of the ds650? Was this quad made for the dunes? I want something that will give me no problems nor head aches and when I want it to start it it will start and when I want to run it will run. Does it run really good with no mods done to it? I really wouldn't mind to have the ds650 I just have some concerns that I hope you can help me settle. Can it do wheelies I know it heavier than others but just wondering. Is there alot of ds that go to the dunes and is there alot of ds out there? When did BRP start to make them?
Thanks for you time and I know that this thread is really load with questions but I hope that I can get some help/closure to all the questions I do have about the ds 650.
P.S If you were going to tell your friend what quad to get what would you tell him and why?
Thanks

They started making them in 2000 and yes they are reliable, over the years they have made some small changes and they seemed to work. Right out of the crate cause of weight mostly they are a bit slower than a 450, but with a few inexpensive mods they do just fine. Stock for stock though they do just fine and they are exceptional duners, you won't find a more comfortable ride. Welcome to the forums.

Welcome to the forums...The ds is a great dune quad which is what it was made for hense DS=Dune Sport...The ds is a very reliable machine and has proven itself over time that is why it does so well in the baja and dakar along with Hondas 450r...The bearing in the rear will not be a problem as long as you repack them with grease, but I ride trails with mine and through mud due to trail riding...As long as you keep up with maintanance you will have one of the most reliable machines out there...The DS is slower off the line compared to other quads, but in top end it is really high on them...I don't think you could ask for a better machine and there are a lot of ds's out there and very knowledgable guys on here that are better then your local dealer...I think you will be happy with the ds and the weight is no problem for jumping and is problably one of the most comfortable rides on a stock quad...Watever you choose wish ya luck and let us know if you are part of the DS family.

I think I'd add the the DS650 engine is used in a BMW motorcycle so it's been around for awhile. The motor is rocksolid. If you're looking at a Predator I would instead look at the Polaris Outlaw with the KTM motor in it.

Guarantee that if u ran ur 3 quad choices non stop they would drop off 1 by 1 and the DS would still be standing and running strong, comparing the motors is apples to oranges, Rotax is def the best. Now DS stands for Dune Sport, so yes it shines very strongly in the dunes. LOL good luck buyin it and not gettin mods on 'er . The best advice anyone can give u is to test ride each one and see which one ur most comfortable on, if u like to cumfort and power than go with the DS, if you like the tippy powerful quad then go with the Raptor, and if u want something that breaks go with the Predator :-D haha j/j, the Pred is ok im not a fan, i've ran them and i think they r just Polaris's way of comin into the sport world, maybe in a few years they will get it right. Plus side of the Raptor is that it has EFI, and well its a 700, so power is at hand, yet u are in the DS forums so naturally we r gonna side with our babies, so u know my top choice

lol if u do it right anything will do a wheelie!! But yes the DS does wheelie fine, the newer models easier than the older models cause they changed the size a lil bit, but i have no prob poppin the front up in 1st and 2nd gear, and on a hill i can do it 3rd and 4th, the DS is very torquey. Like i said ur gonna have a hard time NOT puttin mods on a DS if u get one, the pipe would be my first suggestion, def a good idea. Do an exhaust search, this topic has been hit many times and we all talk about our fav's and pros/cons of a lot of pipes

The DS is by far the toughest of the quads you listed and it may well be one of the toughest quads ever produced. EVERY... and I mean EVERY part is over built and by far tougher than anything on the market. The Rotax engine is proven, and as someone else mentioned it came from a BMW motorcycle. The DS is made for the dunes (again as someone else mentioned) and you will not find a more comfortable stock ride. Everyone I ride with has dumped coutless thousands of dollars into a-arms and shocks and I'm chillin on my stock setup.
A pipe is an excellant addition, and like the rest of the parts the stock exhaust header is damn near a performance header... IMO a slipon like HMF is all you need unless you are into drag racing. I ride with a bunch of tricked out 400cc Banshees, a bored out 250R (very sick I might add), a Z470 stage III,and all sorts of YFZ's and 450R's. I'm not losing a step to any of them accept at the hill. These are little dudes... 150lbs on a 350lb machine... my third grade math says thats about 500lbs. The DS is 500lbs, and I'm lay'in at a trim 360... more elementary math... 860lbs throwing sand at these little guys. Now I don't know what you tip the scales at but, keep in mind the less you weigh the faster you are. If one of my buddies took my bike for a trip up the hill I bet they would be screaming.... that hasn't happened yet because I won't give up my DS for anything... I don't even want to sit on one of those little bikes.LOL
Good luck.....
you'll need it especially if you end up with either of those other bikes.... Go ahead make me a sales pitch maybe not that far but at least some pics and what it will do for me. Is it good or make the quad better in any way by blowing the packing out of the stock exhaust? And can you ride without the end cap on the exhaust good/bad idea? Go ahead and help me some fill me in on all the lingo around here like a slip for the exhaust etc. Thanks so much for all your help!!!!!!!!! Thanks
