Can- Am 650 4X4 'on the fly'??
#1
Hello,
Looks like I'm going to purchase a Can-Am 650 Max XT; however I can not seem to determine if you can shift into 4 wheel drive 'on the fly'??? My local dealer says yes as long as the wheels are rotating at about the same rate but the owners manual I downloaded from the Can-Am website states you have to stop to shift into 4X4 mode. Which way is it???
Thanks

I think that most owners manuals for 4x4's state that you must stop - this is the best way to guarantee that you will not damage the system while changing from 2x4 to 4x4. However, it is correct that you can shift on the fly - the wheels do need to be rotating the same speed so just make sure that you are at moderate speeds, not accelerating or turning sharply. You do need to stop completely to shift from Hi range to Lo range and back.
I've been running 4x4 ATV's for ten years and have always shifted on the fly - no problems or issues at all.
