AV High Ocatne Fuel
#1
Hi, I just got back in to the ATV ridding. I had a ALBA 200 Bombardier DS650 will all the toys. Now I just bought a 2004 DS650 Baja X (Black). I just found out that the company is now called Can-Am. Well, don't understand but my question is regarding fuel. This bike is currently running on high octane fuel (I think its called AV fuel and it's arround 112 octane). The guy that sold it to me told me to continue using it so that the bike runs good. In all honesty the bike runs great it starts up great and responds without hessitation. Basically it is a rocket! It has a large carburator (don't know much about it), has after market box and the RON Woods exhaust.
My questions are as follows:
Do I need to continue using this fuel?
I am into trail ridding and adventures and carrying a tank of fuel is not my cup of tea. Is it true I can buy and additive for regular premium fuel that would work as well?
Will I harm the engine by using this fuel on the long run?
Thanks,
Joseph

What sort of internal work has been performed? Piston, cams, valves, things of that nature? If the guts are OEM you'd be fine with pump fuel with the mods that you've laid out.
Welp, time for the National Championship. I'll be back to play 101 questions in a couple of hours...

No internal mods to my knowledge. The only mods are bolt on. Could the carburator, instake or electric box mods make a difference that would require high octane fuel?
As I said it runs great and starts like a charm. I don't mind loosing a mile or two on top end my concen is that if it is possible to have combustion problems by downgrading?
Would just bolt on's only justify using high ocatne fuel? My brother said the same that if the head and pistons are stock I would be OK with regular premium. I just wanted to be sure.
Thanks again,
Joseph

Stock DS has a compresion ratio of about 9.5:1... at that ratio you absolutly do NOT need 112. You can actually run 87 for the best performance. High octane fuel has a slower burn rate and with such low stock comp ratio you need something with the fastest burn rate possible for that particular piston. That would be 87. I run a Vortex ignition which advances the timing so I do not run 87 because I was getting some kickback at startup and shutdown. High octane won't hurt but I wouldn't waist your money on that fuel... you don't need it.

Unless you are runing a 14:1 compression piston. You won't need 112. I would call the guy you got the 04 X from and ask him what piston he had put into her. If she is 11.5 or less then premium pump is fine.
