Polaris Predator 50 Oil Change Help/Question
#1
Need a bit of help, I bought a used '05 Predator 50. Do not have an owners manual with it. I was trying to change the oil today and was a bit puzzled. I am used to doing this on 2 wheelers, not so much with Quads. I asked the parts guy at the local Polaris dealership what oil to use, he gave me a 10W-40 Honda Oil he said would work fine in it.
So I pull it out today, look at the motor/transmission and find the see-through window with the add/safe lines, the cap where you add oil right above it and a drain plug on the bottom side. Looks pretty straight forward. I take of the fill plug, take off the drain plug and some oil starts to run out, not very much comes out but I look in the window and it has dropped down out of the see-through window. I tipped the Quad several directions and did not seem to get much more oil to come out. So I put the plug back in and began to fill it with oil. It only took 4 ounces before the window was showing it full. So I buttoned it back up, started it, let it run a few minutes and checked it again, still full. Did I do something wrong or is that all the oil it takes? Also, is there anywhere else that I would add oil to on this Quad (besides the oil injector tank or where I put the oil in today)? It is a 2 stroke motor.
One other question as well. When you ride this quad and stop suddenly, the oil light flashes on for just a second and then goes back off. Is this normal as well or does it indicate a problem of some kind.
Thanks for any help any one can provide, I have always turned wrenches on my motorcycles but this quad I got for my son is my first 4 wheeler and some of this is new to me. I just wish I had the owners manual!

The 2 stroke motor has no oil in the motor. The only oil to change is the gearbox oil and that should use gear oil. You add oil to the injector oil tank and if it is somewhat low and you come to a sudden stop the light will sometimes flash. When the light stays on is when you need to add oil right away. If it flashes you are fine but getting low. The 2 strokes are very low maintenance. The gearbox takes very little oil. Its just enough to keep the chain inside the gearcase wet. 4oz sounds right. Thats about what our 90 takes and its pretty much the same motor.

Thanks for the input! One other question, you said to use gear oil in the gear box, the dealership gave me 10W-40 oil. Is that ok or do I need to use a different weight gear oil?
Sorry, I thougt of one more question. I pulled the air filter out and it out was dry. I am used to charging my air filters on my motorcycles with filter oil. I feel like I should do the same here am I correct or do I just clean it and put it in dry?
An owners manual would clear a lot of this up. I may have to see if I can buy one. Thanks again!

I just looked it up... 7 oz AGL Synthetic Gearcase Lubricant is what it calls for. I never trust my local Polaris dealers they just seem to guess.....
It also states to clean the air filter with mild detergent and let dry and reinstall. no oil

Hey, thanks for the help. I was able to download the manual from their website. And you are correct the dealership did just seem to be guessing. So I guess tonight I need to drain the oil back out and put in the correct gear oil as well as clean and dry the filter (out of habit I had already charged it).
One other thing, for the injector oil, I read what the manual calls for (the owners manual always wants you to use their oil) but was wondering if Maxima Racing Synthetic Injector Oil would work as well. I use the Maxima in my KTM (Pre-Mix) and had inadvertantly bought a bottle of the Injector Oil once and was wondering if you think it would work ok in the Predator?

Any good 2 stroke oil is fine and probably better than the Polairs stuff...
When I switched over I waited till the last drop of the Polaris oil that came in it new was gone. I have heard there may be a problem with mixing brands. As long as you go from synthetic to synthetic I am sure it is fine. When I switched oils I also put an ounce or two in the gas just in case there was a clog problem.
