I have a Rubicon and have been cleaning my stock airfilter in the correct manner. I now have two questions. I have read that it is recommended to apply a bit of high temperature grease on the portion of the filter that meets with the airbox. What I do not know is if this applies to my machine since I tighten the filter down with a O-ring? Also, I have read about pre-filters being used with K&N filters. Can you use them on a foam filter? Thanks guys!!

 

I never greased it either on my rancher and never had a problem. As far as the pre filter over the foam filter, I wouldn't. It would be a little more restrictive than stock.

 

As far as being a little more restrictive, do you mean pertaining to the power that the ATV can develop with restriced airflow? What I am getting at is I am not concerned about going fast. In fact, I do not go over 20-25mph ever. My Rubicon is a workhorse. So I was thinking that for the added protection it might be worth it. Or could the restricted airflow lead to greater problems inside the engine?

 

Don't waste your time putting a cover on a stock air filter. Save yourself some time and buy a K&N. Not to mention you are going to get a little more power. Once you have a K&N you can buy a "recharge" kit to keep it clean. Find one on rockymountainatv.com. They are pretty darn cheap even with shipping.

 

I agree that there is no need in a pre-filter on a stock air filter. When someone speaks of restricting airflow this will drop hp at all ranges. Its not a good idea to restrict to much or open up to much without doing some mods.

Pre-filters are mainly used with the paper style filters such as K&N to catch stuff that the K&N won't. I don't agree with scottphillips88 and the K&N filter. K&N will allow better airflow and give you a little extra horse but if this is a farm atv theres a good chance you kick up dust that will get through the K&N that won't get through the stock or other foam style filters.
