Comet cluth for prairie
#1
Ok guys, my primary cluth is basically toast. It has over 3000 miles on it and the dealer said that it wont work anymore and a new clutch is needed. They quoted my 630$. I told them i would be up to pick it up because im just going to put a comet clutch on it. Will i be good going with this clutch. Ive read some reviews and it apperently works fine. There was a well written artical by jps i think from nyroc that has it on his 700 and he likes it. I just want a reliable clutch. Will i be fine going with comet.

The clutch is rebuildable but may not be worth it depending which parts are worn out. On mine the sheaves where the belt rides was grooved so I opted to replace with Comet (2000 Prarie 400 4x4) at around 3300 miles.
The Comet operation is fine but when I am off-camber leaning left it makes a tinging noise. I suspect the noise is from the back of the clutch touching something on the motor like the bolt heads behind the clutch. I plan to check that and maybe grind the heads down a little.
Also, I replaced the belt while I had it apart. I went with a Carlisle. Either from the extra width or from the Comet Clutch, the belt doesn't fully disengage. The fix is to shim the secondary to drop the belt down a little but I haven't done that yet. It requires a special washer to shim it.
Also note - if you go with Comet you will need to get their clutch puller as well because the Kawi puller will not work on the Comet.
Oh - I have a Kawi puller I'll probably never use again (used once) so if you need one I would be willing to sell it.
