Default 87 trailboss 250 R/ES (HELP!!)

Ok so the other day me and a friend are out riding my quads and my old polaris just dies on me after he hits a puddle... ok when this happens it usually sits for a couple minutes and the pull and it will start right up... but no this time i pulled and it backfired on me, now when it does start it runs for 3-5 seconds with the choke all the way open and stops....

Does anybody have any idea what could be wrong??? I want to get this running again so i can sell it...

Have you checked to see if there is water in the airbox? Check the air filter, carb etc... Will it crank?

make the plug wires or any electronics arent arcing somewhere from bad connections or wires as well as the water in the gas/air supply.

there is no water in the box or anything..... it does crank and then after like 5 seconds it shuts off.... there is no battery in it so would that matter if there was a wire touching somewhere if so what wires would effect that...
