I have a 2006 Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O and I need to change the oil.I went to the dealer i bought the atv from and they said I could ONLY use Polaris oil because of some "detergent" stuff and if I didnt use Polaris oil it would burn the engine up.I bought 5w40 Rotella T full synthetic oil @ Wal-Mart.Can I use this oil or should I go with something else?I really dont want to spend $8.99 per quart of oil for Polaris brand.Any help would be awesome I plan on doing the change tomorrow before I go riding.Thanks..

 

alot of people use other brand oils. as long as its the right number 0-40 fully synthetic. just make sure its good quality like mobil one or amsoil. im not sure about rotella, although we use it in the big trucks.

 

Check the API service class such as API-sg,sh in the owners manual or on the oil they want to sell you. As long as the second letter matches or is higher in the alphabet as
sj the oil is fine. Sj exceeds sg. Be sure to use the right viscosity based on the outdoor temperature. If the dealer tells you that you must use their oil or the warranty is void than they must supply you that oil free. Remember, Polaris does not manufacture oil.

 

The Rotella your thinking about is fine.
