I HAVE A 1998 400 ARCTIC CAT 2X4 EXHUAST PIPE COMING FROM HEAD TURNS CHERRY RED WHILE RIDING IT.EVERYTHING IS RUNNING COOL RADIATOR WORKS AND FAN. COULD IT HAVE EXHAUST RESTRICTION CAUSING MANIFOLD PIPE TO TURN RED.

Not sure but my guess would be late timing. Your cam chain could be stretched. That could cause your valve opening to be off and the fuel to be burned a little late (while it is exiting as exhaust) and could cause the header pipe to be hotter than normal. This can also lead to burning a valve so be carefull and have it checked.

There is no timing adjustment. If the chain is stretched you must replace it.
Some times this is casued by a rich condition inthe combustion chamber and the fumes are burning in the exhaust. Check your plug color.
It can also be casued by a burnt valve or if valves are out of adjustment.
I would start with the fuel mixture by checking the plug color and then look at the valves.
Unless it has over heated, or has 15000+ miles it is probably not a stretched timing chain.

Not sure on your machine but my 400 there is no adjustment for timing. The only thing that can be done is with the chain tensioner. I took mine out and there is a little spring in there, I stretched it a little 'like you can do with a ball-point pen', just to make it a little more stiff. Other than that there is nothing you can do short of replacing faulty parts. Oh you can adjust the valve lash. And you can change the gap on your sparkplug to change the timing a little. "Narrow gap = retarded timing", "Wide gap = advanced timing"
I am narrow gapped - retarded.... lol.... All the lights are on but no one is home - hehe.

any help would be great thanks.
