Sand Mountain Nevada Memorial Weekend Camping READ

I am supersonictoys' son. He called me from the mountain on his cellphone and he said he was concerned because so many people expected him to save space for them, and even though he marked off an enormous area, it is almost full already. He wanted me to inform those of you who were expecting him to save space for you, that chances of him having space for you are slim.
There is still tons of space available at the mountain, that is not the issue. It seems like the crowd is slim, it's just that his group was larger than expected, and already has ten RVs in it.
He just wanted to let you know that you are probably on your own for space, but that he still looks forward to meeting you at the mountain. So stop by, he'll be on the fence.

Good to hear there is a big crowd of Bombs, hope someone has a camera for some pics of the weekend for us. Ten RV's sounds like a good number of people, maybe some late nights coming up
I think SST,s young bloke deserves more pocket money as well, leaving him out of the sand box is not good. Come on dad, up the allowance.

Made it to Sand Mtn for Mem day weekend and am at a motel in Fallon with wireless through my PDA .
A little update.
Watched SST run today (Fri), freakin faaast. Same with a lot of bikes here. Loads of people and more streaming in.
SST had a mishap with an errant 3 wheeler at the top of the hill and both riders flew off their bikes. Both seemed ok. He'll have stories to tell.
Spent most of my time today taking vids. I've got to try to meet some forum members Sat. Haven't seen Dsnut. I need a keyboard for this damn thing. out

Wow, that was my first time to SM nv and I did not enjoy it much.
The camping area is too small, I couldn't find a space so I wound up parking in the middle of the kids track..LOL I had kids circling my tent the whole time....
Wierd place, rangers all over the place but no one was wearing a helmet and people were riding double, saw one guy riding around with an infant on his tank. Not a big deal for me, but it was just odd after riding at Dumont all these years.
My bike was having serious problems, the combination of alltitude and heat killed every trace of power. I even fashioned a homemade aftercooler for the blower but it was just too little cooling, too much heat.
My blower's water cooler went from icewater to HOT water in 5 minutes.
So at Dumont the bike was doing about 60mph in january, this weekened at SM I radared 41...... yea.... that sucks....
So my bike is down until I can get this worked out. It may be detonating, or it may be the blower is just heating the intake charge so much the engine can't make power. I'll work it out.... maybe methanol.
Saw some fast banshees... not really alot of fast 4s running at SM.. the whole experience just made me miss dumont.

Memorial IS the biggest weekend there each and every year. You have to be committed (or maybe should be committed) to go there that weekend.
Generally, the camping area is small.
It is amazing what a loss in power you get at that altitude. . . you can modify a lot of bikes and leave the stock swinger on them and do fine with the power loss up there.

MetalAlien, I've seen you at Dumont several times and marveled at that crazy azz machine of yours!LOL I asked this in another thread but seeing as to how you've been to both and SM NV is fresh on your mind, would you mind comparing the two? I plan on making the trip up there for DS Days and I've done a little research and to me the satellite images of NV seem as it is a smaller set of dunes than Dumont. And looks like only one bowl to speak of.
So size wise how do they compare, and sand wise? Is there as drastic of a difference in the sand between the two as there is between Glamis and Dumont? I know NV has what looks to be a tenth of the camping area.
So what's the real scoop from someone who's been to both recently?
Thanks
Ace

I would say about 1/5 to 1/7 the camping area???
Sand at Sand Mt, NV can be very different at different times of the year. For DS Day's it will be very light (dry from the summer). You'll have a hard time getting up the steep hill. . .
The big thing about Sand Mt. is the hill. It is longer and steeper than Dumont AND it is staring at you. . . looking in your face. . . ALL DAY LONG. . . you sit in camp and it is there. In your chair and it just stares you down. . . other's are racing up all day long just asking you to come throw a bucket of sand in their face. . . IT'S FREEKIN' BEAUTIFUL!
