I'm from south west PA temps been around 0-25 starter doesnt turn engine over then it will then it wont makes wine sound let off button works for a second then wines. once it it warm it works normal. called a good dealer ship and head tech said its just the real cold weather lately said even the new ones do it if they leave them outside all day. mine is kept in an unheated garage. anyone else have this problem? any suggestions?

when i got mine last year in the summer and decided to ride it in the winter i kept fouling out plugs. took it to a honda dealer and they had it for about 3 days before it would run ok. ever since then i don't ride mine in the winter too much(maybe once a winter). the dealer said the 400 is hard to start anyways but add cold and it is even harder. so from what i heard a hard starting 400 in the winter is normal. maybe try and jet it. just some thoughts good luck

I went thru it last night w/ my 01' 400ex. BLAH!

I'm in northeast Ohio, its been pretty cold here lately. I could get mine to start, but couldn't keep it running even with full choke unless I kept on the throttle a little bit.

I pulled the plug and noticed some dirt/dust in the threads, I cleaned it up but the plug looks fouled to me...Once i put a new plug in, it fired right up, just wouldnt keep running.

My last mods were a K&N and a dynojet kit, but I've ridden since then, so I'm hoping its just the cold weather. I'm going to try it again in a few hours. Maybe I'll get to go play in the snow today

My 2000 with full Yosh pipe and silencer, 170 main, and K&N with modded air box always starts. I am from NY and it is kept in a shed all year round. Never fouled a plug and never had a problem starting.

A couple of my friends and myself went on a trip with our bikes. 2 Banshees, 1 Scrambler 500 4X4, Warrior, & 400ex. Well, all the bikes started right up expect for the 400ex. It took awhile for the 400ex to start and the bike was pretty new. A couple of other guys that were there mentioned that they had the same problem.

I live in nova scotia, canada, and it can get pretty cold sometimes. once, it was -21 degrees celcious, and it started. It ALWAYS starts, however, it starts really bad. it will run for 3 seconds, then stall. that happens about 3-4 times.
What I do is as soon as I start it, I drive in 1rst gear around my driveway(pretty big) while having a low-mid rev with the choke on half way. If you rev it a lot, you can ruin your engine in the long run. I always put mine in the barn( live on a farm) for a couple hours to warm it up. then it starts as if it were 10 degrees celcious.

Your pilot jets are all too lean then. Put in a #42 pilot jet and you won't have to worry about your 400EX starting.

first i took my ex to the shop to have the valves checked and a complete check up. when i got it back it started fouling out plugs. after the 2nd time i told them to fix it or they just bought my quad, i got it back and they told me they didn't know what it was. however it was fixed, they told me they took the carb apart but nothing was wrong. i didn't worry about it cause no probs. now.
