General Tune Up Questions
#1
I have a 2006 Honda Rubicon GPScape. It is time for me to do a mild tune up on it, or so I think. If I could get some opinions on this i would appreciate it.
1. How often do you guys change your spark plug?
2. What type of spark plug do you recommend?
3. How often do you change your oil & filter?
4. Do you see a benefit to a K&N or similar type air filter?
5. My Rube got really hot and lost a lot of coolant while out riding. In a quick fix I purchased some Prestone 50/50 premixed antifreeze solution.

Do you think this will cause any problems?
6. To insure this wont happen again, I am still looking for a good add on temp gauge. Any suggestions on this.
Thanks for help.

1. I think the book says to inspect plug like every 1200.
2. I'd use the factory one specified in the owner's manual.
3. Engine oil is likely first 100 miles, then every 600 after that.
-- Don't forget to check valves.
4. Personally, I'd stick with the factory foam filter...
5. Coolant for autos has silicates (abrasives) in it to control corrosion, but they are too harsh for the smaller seals on motorcycle water pumps. If that coolant wasn't specifically for motorcycles (and it appears it isn't) I'd flush it out and replace it promptly. Adding water wetter or something similar might help with cooling efficiency.
6. I think High Lifter might offer a temp guage. I've seen threads about some of the older Rubicons overheating, but thought that was supposed to be corrected... Was the radator packed with mud or snow or something? Is the fan coming on properly? Some folks add a fan over ride to turn the cooling fan on manually before the temp switch would normally kick it on...
