Well my neighbors quad died while riding the other day and was smoking and has no compression so the rings are shot...What I need to know is could I use the stock ring gap size and hone the cylinder out or will I have to adjust the ring sizes according to how much I hone it(honing isn't alot so I would think I could use the stock setting)...Also I was wondering on reassembling the cylinder back on do I need to lube up the piston with some oil and put some in the cylinder...If anyone has any tips that would help I would greatly appreciate it thanks and any ring gap file that someone would recommend using...I have to get some tools and I will be pulling it apart and checking out and see how badly it is damaged...Thanks

 

Hone the cyclinder, get it all cleaned up and put the ring inside the cyclinder, make sure that it square inside the bore and measure the gap and file accordingly until you get the correct stock gap. I use ATF to coat the cyclinder wall for initial lube. You dont get oil baked in the rings that way.

 

be sure you wet the hone with light oil, solvent , wd40 , just dont do it dry. try and hone as little as possible. excessive honing will loosen up tolerances and it will run like a worn out motor.

 

Alright thanks guys I just wasn't sure if I could hone it and put it back in without re boring the cylinder...I haven't taken it apart, but will be soon after I get some of the specs and stuff to torque the bolts down and will be sure to measure the piston and cylinder with a micrometer or vernier caliper and will luve up the piston before putting it back in...I have honed before and worked on some of the smaller engines taking them apart, but haven't gone as far as taking the rings out on a quad just valves and stuff...I appreciate the help and it should be pretty easy I just needed a few things cleared up and the bomb guys pulled through again thanks.
