New to ATVs. I think we're ready to make a purchase...
#1
Hi all.
After doing some research and thinking, I think my girlfriend and I are ready to purchase a pair of ATVs. We live in Minnesota and are in our 40s and both ride (Polaris) snowmobiles. The lack of snow in recent years has definitely led to a desire to get a couple toys that can be used on a more consistent basis.
While I admit it may be a little overkill, especially since we both just rode ATVs for the first time a few weeks ago, we're getting decent sized machines ('07 Sportsman 700 EFI for me, '07 Sportsman 500 EFI for my girlfriend) because we plan on keeping them for a long time and we wanted to get machines we're not going to outgrow or get bored with. Plus, these are the same displacement as our sleds, so it seemed logical :-).
I shopped around and I think I got some decent prices (at least they're the best I could find in the Twin Cities on new machines - $7200 OTD with a winch and hand/thumb warmers on the 700, $6500 OTD with hand/thumb warmers on the 500). Hope we're doing OK.
Anyway, we're looking forward to getting out there and having some fun. This forum has been very helpful, I've been reading for a while now, but just joined today for my first post. So thanks for all your assistance! Hope to see you out on the trails.

if u r buying them from the same place then they should give u a deal for buying 2 machines. when i bought my rzr and my son's 500 they lowered the price on them and we got the 500 deluxe for 6800. so i think u could get a delux 500 for that same price.

If you got an 07 500 deluxe for $6,800, you did really well, seeing as though it MRSP's for $7,700, and the standard for $6,900 I believe, but you also bought a Razr, which is a tad bit more than a 700 EFI, which goes for about $7,700.
I would say you are doing alright, given that if you are trading in your sleds then they are giving you a fair price. What years and models are your sleds, are you trading them in, and what are they giving you for them, if you don't mind me asking,
Jim

Do the prices you guys are talking about include sales tax, license fees, etc...?? The advertised selling price is $6199 on the 700 and $5899 on the 500. These prices are hundreds of $$ less than many of the Twin Cities dealers. The prices I quoted in my first post included everything: accessories, 6.5% MN sales tax, license, etc...
And actually, we're keeping the sleds. We're not completely giving up on that sport yet.

hi gs470 good choice in machines... but i say you only live once shell out a few xtra bucks and get yourself the sp 800 in fact i think you should get the sp800x2 deluxe and get your girl the 500x2 deluxe i dont know when or even if the 08 models are going to be available but i would think soon. try to get salesman down to between 14k and 15k otd (make sure you get him to throw in the 2 year warranty) whatever you decide just make sure you get yourself the 800 not the 700.you wont regret it...good luck w/whatever you end up with

Those are good prices. I believe invoice cost is about 12% below MSRP with dealer holdback being another 5% so your price is about $100 over dealer cost.

I'm glad to hear we did decent on our prices .
There will be no upgrading to an 800 or any X2 models for us. The line had to be drawn somewhere, and the plain old 700 and 500 are where it's drawn. We're already spending waaay more than we wanted to. Our original goal was to find a couple nice used machines for $3-4k each, but they were older and rougher than what I was expecting in that $ range . From what I saw, nice, newer used machines were holding their price pretty well and I felt it was worth it to look for a good deal and spend a little more and get exactly what we wanted and avoid what someone else has possibly beaten into the ground.
NASCARGUY - I just noticed we're neighbors. I'm in Ham Lake! Where do you go riding around here? Do you ride with your wife/GF?
