Default would this be a good first 4 wheeler ?

I wouldn't get a Recon and go dumping a bunch of money into it, unless you are a small/light person and it will be a terminal machine for you. The Recon is a good machine for beginner adults or intermediate kids, but that is pretty much how far it goes. It is a fun ride for sure, but it has very limited suspension and while the power is descent, it's not going to thrill anybody.

If you are a larger rider, best to just start out with something bigger. If you must have a Recon, ride it a while to get some experience, then quickly move on to something else. Don't waste your money trying to hop it up.

Do you really need a utility???? The Recon is 2wd, so it isn't a hard core ute by any means. As far as entry level machines go, the 250EX is a Recon in sport plastic...and a hefty 50 pounds lighter! If you want to stay with a smaller machine, the 300EX is excellent and the new Raptor 250 looks to have a lot of promise. But if you are bigger, just start out on a bigger machine......
