This has probably been beat to death already, but I can't seem to remember the facts, so could you all give a few pointers or comments/suggestions on what you think is best here, any and all thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

So, a buddy of mine does some racing of sprint cars and such, uses a top quality racing fuel for that stuff. Anyway, he just got some new stuff in from a place called ERC? Does that sound right? Anyway, it's a company out of California I guess who specializes in this type of fuel, and dyno's as well. They claim a 10 hp gain on a 500 hp engine, but since we're talking atv's here, I see no real reason to even compare the two. My buddy runs this stuff in his bike, swears that it is awesome fuel, and has done wonders for his bike. From what I understand, it's a Yamaha 250 dirt bike '00 model, not sure what particular kind. Anyway, he's trying to give me a tank full of the fuel to run in my 'Cat. Says I need at least 8.5:1 compression and everything will be OK, that it will greatly increase the performance of the machine.

Now, he's claiming that since it is so much higher octane, it burns much cleaner, more efficiently and uses less fuel, also is better on the engine. How much of that is true? It was my understanding that with some engines, you could actually loose power due to higher octane ratings? Not sure, I've heard that before somewhere. I run normal premium fuel 92 octane in my 'Cat as well as all but one of my vehicles. The 'Cat seems to do just fine with it, so should I even bother to burn the tank of the racing fuel he wants to give me? Would that do any harm at all? I have no pinging noise, which would suggest possibly increasing the octane rating, so I really see no need to even try this stuff, what do you guys think?

Again, I don't know the plain facts, so I can't just tell him no, for such and such reasons, other than I just don't care to. Do you guys think it would be worth trying, or just a waste of time and expensive fuel that he could otherwise be using in his sprint cars?

Thanks for the thoughts,

Mike

Unless you have a higher compression piston in your quad I would't even bother running it.Because higher octane fuel like 110 is used with quad's with higher compression piston's so that the fuel doesn't pre-combust and seize the engine due to high compression, Higher octane fuel also burns slower compared to pump gas. It would work but your exhaust would get really hot because of the fuel still burning when it leaves the engine.let me know if you use it and if it works out.

Like he was saying, race gas is to be used in a high compression engine. You do not have that type engine in your quad. You will get the best results from 93 grade from your local gas station. Think of it this way, what you want to do is like putting the fuel from NASCAR into your regular car or truck. The only thing that you will see is a big hole or empty spot in your wallet.

Hey Cowboy ! Hope you had a good new year!
If your buddy wants to give you a free tank of fuel, by all means take it and thank him. But don't expect to see or feel any difference in performance on the Cat. Higher octane fuel in an unmodified engine will result in no performance gains. Using the fuel wont do any damage to your quad though. (especially only 1 tank)
Even if the same formula he gave you about a 10 hp gain on a 500 hp engine held true on a quad. You would only realize a 2% gain on say a 20 hp (estimate)engine resulting in a 4/10 hp increase.

If you want some real gogo juice go to your local small air port and buy a little bit of Jet Fuel....Mix it with some gas but you have to be sure to get the ratio just right or you will see your whole aluminium Head melt...but you put that in there just right and you will be able to keep up with a Raptor or ds650 guanteed....and if you have the ratio just right it doesn't hurt motor..hahahahahahahah well i got my 1998 Honda Fourtrax up to 92.....thats a 600+ quad..hahahahah
