Please help me with a question about lost key to kids ATV
#1
Hi, I really need help......
My daughter has a 2001 Dinli 50 Beast. It is a great atv and has never given me any problems. We love it and our other little Dinli 50 Dino. However, my kids took the key out of the Beast and lost it. Well one day I was mowing and guess what I ran over. I never could find the metal part of the key, just the plastic top. I called a Dinli dealer and the new key ignition would cost me more than I could afford right now and they don't have a key for it anymore and can't get it he said. Is there any way to wire this key ignition for now so it will run???? It has an electric start and all the key does is turn the machine on and then you start it by pushing a button that actually turns over the motor and starts the engine. To start this atv you turn the key on to either two positions, one turns it on and the other position turns it on and the lights on. Then you switch a button on that either turns the engine on or off. Then you hit the starter and the engine turns over. One guy told me I could wire it to a toggle switch, but I don't know how to do this when I have more wires than a toggle switch has. The key ignition has 6 wires, brown, pink, red, green, yellow and black. Any help would be greatly appreciated by me and my 3 kiddos. They are tired of sharing the 07 Polaris Outlaw 90 and the Dinli Dino. All three want to ride their own atv's. Thanks so much! Suzanne

This might not be a great help, but maybe you could get the schematic from Dinili? Here is the contact information: http://www.dinliusa.com/contact_us.html. If you had the schematic, then "Hot-Wiring" it would be easy.

I have the wiring info. in the Owner's manual, but gosh I can't understand it. I guess my mechanical knowledge is limited to say the least! I don't understand the parts. My manual lists the wiring to these parts: rectifier and regulator/relay/battery/left lever holder assy/C.D.I Unit/ignition coil/brake switch/main switch/safety switch/spark plug/carb P.T.C/resistor/start motor/AC generator What should I look at for wiring???? This is greek to me and I have no guys around to help me. Can you point me in the right direction? I can wire and hang a fan and wall plug, lol, but I can't get this. grrrr Thank you for your reply, Suzanne

well, you might be able to drill the key switch and just use a screw driver, you just need to look at where the wires go to. this should not be a difficult job, but drilling out the switch you already have is where I would start.

You can remove the ignition switch romf the quad and take it to a good locksmith ; they can make you a kiey if you take it a good qualified locksmith ! It won't be cheap but should be less than buying the whole work's , it will cost you about $25.00 for two key's ; i had to do the same thing about a month ago on a 86' Honda TRX 350 4x4 for my brother when lost his key's ! The Honda dealer told my brother the same thing that they couldn't get a new key even if it were a new quad , they just wanted to sell him a new switch ! .......................williebee

Thank you everyone, I am not sure how to drill out a key hole and I think I would really screw that up. ha I never thought of a locksmith. hmmm $25 is a lot better than $70 plus shipping for the whole ignition. I can afford a locksmith maybe. I am not sure about sodering the wires back though correctly and I don't own a sodering gun. I will definately call a locksmith and try that route though. I can always take the 4 wheeler to them. Oh, "itch" I have made him pay for it in more ways than one. My son is the one who lost his sister's key so he has to let her ride his new Polaris whenever she wants. lol Plus, he will have to pay for the amount I come up with out of his chore money. However, I don't give them much since they should help out around the house anyway. It should take him awhile to pay for it. They should listen to their momma, I told them to leave the keys in the atvs unless we have them out and about. He was just being funny and wanting to give her a hard time, now it got him in trouble.
I appreciate the help from all of you though.
Thanks,
Suzanne
