Rear Axle Removal

Per previous post I need to replace the bearings for the rear axle. Purchased manual and attempted to remove axle.
Was able to back off locking nut. Then attempted to back off snap ring nut but was unable to free it. According to the manual you spin the lock nut counter clockwise to free it from the snap ring nut. Then you spin the snap ring nut counter clockwise to expose the snap ring.
I was able to get a pipe wrench top grab the nut. Even with an extension on the wrench I was unable to turn the nut. Tried heating up the nut, tapping the nut, I even was jumping on the wrench but it would not budge. Am I missing something?
What have people used for wrenches? The lock nut is 56mm and the snap wring nut is 45mm according to the manual. I do not think I can buy a box wrench that big. I was able to use channel locks for the lock nut and a pipe wrench for the snap ring nut, but I could probably get more leverage if I had a box wrench.
Anyone out there done this job?

I knew it was backwards thread, but I just could not break if free. I, along with a buddy, worked for 2 hours to try and break it free. Finally I got out my dremmel sliced the nut and pryed it open. My guess is the previous owner replaced the bearing and put on red lock tite.
