400ex oil

Default 400ex oil

Went to get oil & and a filter today all they had was honda gn4 20w-50 I usually run 10w-40 the guy said it was alright to run the thicker oil, I live in S. Louisiana right now it's about 95 degrees think it's safe? thanks. It's a 2005

Absolutely! In the mild southern states, 20W50 is what you should run in summer, and 10W40 in winter.

In the frozen north, 5W30 in winter and 10W40 in summer.

Honda GN4 is a low tech basic petroleum oil. I would run Honda HP4 synthetic blend instead, or one of Maxima's oils.

Being air/oil cooled, the EX can sometimes get hot. Plus, the cam area can be subject to high rates of wear with thin oils. Best to run thicker oils with this machine!
