Change 500 to 500 H.O.?
#1
If you wanted to change a Polaris 500 motor to a 500 H.O. motor, is it true that all you gotta do is change the cam and the carb?
If so, why don't more people do it? Is it hard to do or expensive? Maybe there are better mods for the buck?
Where do you even get a 500 H.O. camshaft and carb? Seems like Polaris dealership would be pricey. I checked on ebay, but didnt see any.
Am I barking up the wrong tree?

its not a bad idea. it will wake your quad right up. i have a 500ho and installed the after market cam from WEB cams. it made a huge difference. that cam was about $165 from rick ritter. i highly recommend going thru him on this process. he will get you what you need and also give you the support you need for the project.
so your looking at about $165 for the cam, and roughly $100 for the carb. (used, and depending where you get the carb) ebay should have several.
hope this helps.....

Thanks for all the help, fellas.
I probably wouldn't do it if it's too expensive, but if there's some parts available for cheap, and all it takes is a cam and carb, then I'm in!

Can you tell us why you want to upgrade? I mean does the 500 leave you wanting more? Just wondering because I'm considering a 500 H.O. (see my recent post "Bombs in Baghdad". I'm trying to find out more and more and more about these quads as I'm seriously leaning toward a Polaris. I'm also the guy who buys something and then find out there was something better. So I'm giving my purchase all the research I can stand.
Good luck with your mod.

I had a 500 h.o. sportsman and it pulled like heck.
Now I have a Ranger with the Carbed 500 in it and it just doesn't feel to have the power that the h.o. had.
I'm sure that A LOT of it has to do with the weight and different designs of the machines.
These Carbed 500 Rangers had a prob. with the needle valves staying open and allowing gas to drip down into the crank...this thins the oil obviously and wears out the camshaft.
Point is, I don't know if my camshaft is worn yet, but I was looking to upgrade if it is, and really didn't know if it would be worth the extra cost. I'd prob. have to purchase the cam either way, but the carb and anything else would be more.

Sounds like a good investment then Spudmud. Not only would you get the gain, but if the repair will have to be made eventually then you may circumvent other issues by doing it early. I mean if the cam is being worn or it is likely that it will happen then there is a chance of a major foul up like throwing the cam completely. I'm no engine expert, but that seems logical. I don't know much about the rangers or any UTV's for that matter. They have them all over the place over here (Iraq). They have a a bunch or rangers, JD Gators, and a few Rhinos. It appears they are tuff and can take a beating. They are perfect for the jobs they use them for over here.
