I run premium(you get a little more power) You can use anything that you want though as long as its atleast 89 is what my dealer said when i bought mine(87 is our lowest possible around here, 89 being one step up, then 90, 91, 93)

The dealer told me only to run Reg. can Premium harm the enigne? or is he covering his ***? also Yamaha calls for reg gas as well. well hell if I can get her to run better I think I'll try a tank of premium and see what happens

87 octane is actually more "explosive" than 93 octane. the higher the number the more resistant to burn it is. you should only need to run 93 if your manual calls for it, or you have installed a high compression piston. i have switched back and fourth and have never noticed any differences. i dont think you could harm your motor by running premium.
edit-i think you can run pump gas up to 12:1 compression

Shoot I run 93 and it actually runs a little better I think. 93 wont hurt anything though. With the pipe, intake and everything I just feel better about being safe than sorry.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>I run premium(you get a little more power) </end quote></div>
You will not pick up more power by running premium fuel.

Premium will not harm your engine but it won't help it either. Why pay more if it does nothing?
Buy regular fuel and take the money saved and buy go fast parts.

The 450 has a 10:1 compression piston. So it will run better on 97.

I run a 10.25:1 piston in my Wolverine, it runs fine on 87 octane, gas does not make power, the piston does. Higher compression means more power on the power stroke from a tighter combustion chamber, so the explosion of air/gas is more intense. The only purpose of higher octane is to slow that explosion to prevent preignition from the extra heat generated. Despite what you think, you are not getting more power from the higher octane on a stock motor, if the 87 is poor quality, you may get a better idle or hot temp performance from mid or premium grade, but not more power. Race gas in a stock motor is a waste of money, anyone who tells you " I got a couple extra hp running premium, or a race/reg blend" is completely wrong. I am not saying this to start an argument, or bash anyon, I have a couple of friends who race, and they only run premium in the motors that are 11:1 or higher, and race or race blend above 12.5:1, and have never had a fuel related problem in several years. Save your money, put regular in the tank, your motor will be fine.

higher quality gas does allow more power to be made(not saying that fuel is the magic power adder and you can gain 20 hp by switching to race gas(anyone who thinks that doesnt know much)). You can have preignition(detonation) occur easier with 87 octane if a motor runs hotter than when stock or if there is a problem with say a small metal shaving in a head that stays hot enough to ignite when fuel is introduced. All I am saying is that I feel safer using better gas and wasting the .06 cents per tank up to have a little more peace of mind.
