Clunking noise on '07 700 SP
#1
A friend of mine just picked up a new '07 700 Sportsman. He's frustrated by a clunking noise that comes possibly from the u-joint area when the throttle is let-off. The dealership told him it would go away as things broke-in, but he's not satisfied with that answer. Any ideas? thanks.

chances are its the normal driveline slop they all have it, and it doesnt really go away. there is backlash noise that you hear when on and off the throttle.

I think the noise can be traced to a loose drive chain inside the gearbox. It will probably get worse as he puts miles on it and the chain stretches. I think that mine has. I know someone that had the chain so loose that it rubbed on the drainplug. The dealership ground the drainplug down to reduce the noise. If you change the oil in the transmission, you can put your finger in the drain hole and feel the slop in the drivechain.
I have also read that the noise is due to something in the EBS. It would be interesting if someone without EBS on a 700 would post their experience with the driveline noise.
Do a search on this forum for "Sportsman Noise" to see just how common this is.
