I had my first wreck (that did any real damage)today. What a way to start the new year. I was going down a trail that went between two trees and I clipped one of them. At first I thought the only damage was to my right thumb. After the pain of the thumb eased I went to take off and it felt like there was play in the steering but it was a grinding. I honestly could not see anything wrong. Had another person with me (on another quad) and niether of us could see anything wrong. The grinding stoped but now it seemed that only one hub was working when in AWD. I knew something was wrong so I took the 2000 Scrambler 400 4x4 home (about one mile). I put a space heater in front of it and let it de-ice. Went back out and seen that the CV shaft had detached itself from the front hub. Went back out later and discovered that the a-arm (backside bar) was bent inward. I also noticed that the backside of the rim was dented in several areas. I assume this is from the CV shaft hitting it. I am afraid that I did more damage by driving it home than the wreck itself. I can not believe that we did not see such obvious damage out on the trail. My question for all of you today is what will the repair bill add up to. I will do the work myself (maybe-more on that later). I will need an a-arm. I also do not know about the CV shaft (any thoughts?). Is it broken or not (how do you tell). I also wonder about the hub / strut base. Also when I grab the shaft out of the good side it has some play in it (in and out maybe 1/4"). I do have insurance ($200.00 deductable). I wonder if they will cancel me as I have only had the quad for three months. I am very suprised as to amount of damage done. I guess that maybe I hit it fast enough that the a-arm absorbed the impact instead of me feeling it as much. I have hit things that felt much more severe than this with no damage done. BTW I do not try and hit things on a regular basis. Sorry to be so long but I needed to tell someone and get some help with what I face this week.

Thanks to all who reply.

If you have any questions that you need to know to better answer my plea for help reply with the question and I will respond soon as I will be watching and waiting for replys.

Happy New Year.
KD

You can stop whinig, you're reading the post of someone even more stupid!!
I haven't been able to see that a water hose was disconnected, had not been intelligent enough to look at the coolant level whereas my powervalves oil was boiling, smoke around the sled (yes, I'm talking about my snowmobile). It all ended by a siezing in. Dumba$$ me!

Zorro what the hell are you talking about? KevinDevitt was asking how much it would cost to fix his quad.He explained how it happened to give us (that are interested in helping others not critizing others)a better view of what was broke, so if you don't want to help then shut up.Do you really think we give a s$$t about your sled?.KevinDevitt I will try to tab up the cost and get back to you.Too bad... but those that don't ride, don't break.Zorro it seems that your the one that is whinning, and well you said it (stupid).

I cant give you any advice on the estimate for damage without first seeing the quad, however,if it were me,I'd take the quad into the dealership for an ACCURATE estimate of repairs, get it in writting.Than depending on the amount of repairs,I'd concider turning this into my insurance company.Dont worry at all about the insurance company cancelling you because you file a claim after only 3 months. You bought the insurance for these types of mishaps, now the insurance company has to honor it.Get an estimate from the dealership and go forward from there, good luck,
Bill

Bill is right on the money. Have the dealer give you an estimate and turn it in to the insurance company. They won’t cancel you on a first “offence” and you’ll (hopefully) have your machine fixed right. If you try to fix it on the cheap and miss things that should be taken care of you’ll be plagued by an unreliable quad and end up being towed out of the woods with more damage.

Hey Zorro.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune as well.

Zorro did not mean to imply anything with his comments.

I would be nervous about re-using the CV shaft after it had been banging around in the rim and such. Check very carefully for straightness and so the splines on the end are not buggered up. The lower strut housing should be OK, as you didn't drive it that far (look it over good anyway).
I would get a repair estimate from a dealer, itemized by expected parts required, as well as labor. If it won't take much over $200 for the parts, and you feel you can do the work yourself, do it & don't worry about your insurance. With a $200 deductable you will have to pay for them anyway. If Parts alone are like $300 or more, depending on your tolerance level, have the whole thing done there. They won't sock it to you for one mishap, but this way you still have a 'clean slate' so to speak, so next time will be your 'first' mishap as far as they are concerned. If you have too many boo-boos they usually don't cancel you, just raise your rates.

Good luck.

Thanks Again.

Polaris stock a-arms are only around 60$ each if my memory serves me correct, and that includes the long inside stem and bolts that go with it,
