Default how do you know if a atv is stolen?

Im buying an atv but the guy dosen't have any paperwork. And he's asking alot lower price than what its worth. Im suspicious. Is their a way to search the vin to see if it was stolen. I said I wouldn't buy it without any paperwork. Also how does he get a new title? He said he lost it. Please let me know.

Call the local fuzz-cops get the vin off of it ask them to run it if your worried about it if you do buy it make him write you a bill of sell with the vin on it and his name make him show you some id to make sure the name he signs is infact him..

I don't want anything to do with a stolen atv. I have a federal job. I want to keep it. My cousin is a cop so he's going to check it out. But If it wasn't reported yet and I buy it then I lost out on money and possible criminal record.

Just because he doesnt have papers doesnt meen its stolen. I bought a 400ex that the guy didnt have any papers for, but I knew the original owner that he bought it from, and everything was on the up and up.

Also, price just depends on the demand.....if the market is flooded with similar machines, then you will have a hard time selling unless you really drop the price. The guy may be in a tight spot too (divorce, lost job, etc.), so he needs to get rid of some toys to pay some bills, thats how I got my 400ex. Situations like divorce can make it hard to keep track of all of the paperwork.

Like everybody else has said, take the vin# and have an officer run it for you. If there are no vin#'s left on the machine (filed or grinded off) then you can pretty much bet on it being stolen.

Ya, that makes everything better. You won't get caught supporting thieves and getting rid of someone else's wheeler.
