Default Oil injection explained

I did search and couldn't find the info that I need. So, I decided to start a new thread and give it a "search friendly" title,,, instead of something like,,, need help,,, LOL.
I have a 95 300 and I'm now sure that the oil injection is DOA. I've ran 4 tanks of mixed gas though it and the level hasn't changed at all. I need to pull the head to repair a leaky head gasket and would like to repair the oil injection while it's apart. I know,,, I know,,, most people seem to be eliminating it but I like the convenience of letting the bike do the mixing while I just add fluids as they get low.

Anyhow, in order to repair it I need to understand how it should work. So, here are a few questions that I have.

Does it inject oil directly into the crankcase or the carb?
What are the common failures in the system?
Does it use a vacuum signal or gear speed to determine how much oil is injected?

And, any other information that you can post would be greatly appreciated.

There is a little hose comming from the back of the motor off the injector that gos up to the left side of the carb.
If you have premix gas in your tank just pull the hose off the carb and start it up you should see oil dripping out of the hose when you rev the motor up.
at a steady idle it will drip about about every 5 seconds.
No drip keep premixing.
I dont see alot of oilpumps going out but i have had a few.
hope this helps.
Good luck..

Thanks, Already tried that and no drops even if I rev the engine. I also pulled the feed like to make sure it wasn't restricted and it had a nice stream of oil. I did that after the drip test because I knew that it would introduce air into the system. Any idea what fails in the pumps and if they're rebuildable?

I have never rebuilt one but I know there TOUGH to get off the motor with out pulling the motor out.
I would tell you to keep premixing they run better and smoke less.

Yea, I had planned to leave it alone but now I need to pull the head. At a glance, it looks like it would be easier to pull the engine rather than try to pull the head with the engine in the frame. SO, I thought I may push my luck and try to rebuild the pump.

The gasket is shot. It's leaking oil between the head & cylinder. It's been that way since Dad owned it but it's gotten worse in the past week. Probably because he just idled around and I tend to use the throttle a little more. It still runs fine but I'm not fond of hot oil being blown onto my leg when the fan kicks on.

I can't see the gasket at all which makes me wonder if the PO left it out. He told Dad that he had just rebuilt the engine before deciding to sell it. He also told him that the oil pump worked but he used premix to be safe. The tank has been full since we got the bike. I've tried bleeding the system by the book and still no level change.

I may take the pump but funds are low at the moment. I just bought a clutch from another member, and need to replace the swing arm bushings as well as the cv boots & head gasket.

well, with reference to my other thread here, I know mine works as the oil level goes down but maybe too quick at $20 a quart for the Motul 510

I didn't realise that premix was an option [I assume not approved by Polaris??], but if you pre mix do you still have to use the expensive synthetic oil or just a normal oil as in motor mower

as you can see from other post my main problem besides cost is I need to go 100 klm back to Cairns Yamaha dealer to even GET the special oil as no one has it up here

We've been using standard 2 cycle oil to pre-mix in this one. However, it does have a tendance to foul the plug if you leave the fuel on when the bike's not in use. I blame that on the carb though (improper float level, leaky check valve, etc.). It does fine when running,,, no major smoke,,, hasn't locked up ,,, plenty of power. We use a 40:1 mixture and that seems to work well although I've heard recently that 32:1 is more accurate. BUT, I wouldn't premix without eliminating the pump because you will be too lean (too much oil and not enough gas). At least, I think that's correct???

so I bought a quart [actually it is a litre] of Caltex Revtex from my local garage and its only $10

it says semi synthetic and spec is meeting JASO M345 as FC

the other Motul is same JASO M345 but is FD

anyone know what all that means?

it is also API TC and ISO EGC

anyway I will give it a try
