Default 400 sportsman running rich

My dealer in Des Moines here has problems adjusting carbs. I have heard that these machines come form the factory running rich, and I have fould several plugs very fast. Is there a common adjustment I can do to the carb to take care of this. It is a 2004.5 machine. Thanks for any help!

you sure the air filter isnt plugged or the vent lines arent restricking the air flow or the out side form filter isnt closing off the air supply. hows the float level set? they do run a little fat from the factory but not that much to make them foul plugs. is the choke (enrichern) stickinh open and letting extra gas in? just a couple of idears. most likely if it hasnt been played w/ before and all sudden starts running rich then i wouldnt think its becasue of an adjustment problem. just my .02 goof luck.

The dealer replaced the air filter and the pre filter when it was in last week. I noticed it running poor again and pulled the plug and noticed the fouling. Is there anything in the carb that I can check?

Would there happen to be a post here about checking those? I can do about everything else, but carbs usually kick my butt.

The 400's came over jetted from the factory there are plenty of threads about this. You need to drop the main jet from a 172.5 which shuold be in it now to a 162.5. This will cure your problem....

Well, I just went and picked it up from the dealer service department and as I figured.... still running poorly. I read the threat that NBsportsman posted and I think the smaller jet is the way to go. Is there a good place to get jets online ort is the dealer the place to go? I am just tired of there run around.

Most likely the dealer would be the best place to pick up a main jet....

OK stupid question.... I pulled the carb apart to get the jet out and it is a 172.5. As said before it is running poor at top speed and cuts out. It was just at the dealer and the made "some adjustment". I am not sure what they did. I pulled the plug and it is white colored after running it about three hard miles. They didn't change the jet... so what would they have adjusted to lean it out a bit? I did look at the needle and the e-clip is on the second slot from the top. I am getting a new jet tomorrow, but I think it may be too lean after that is installed. Is there an air/fuel screw they may have messed with?
