sportsman is smoking at startup???
#1
hey all, i had the top end rebuilt 2 years ago due to me not keeping the air filter well oiled and i got a lot of dust sucked in it, so that sucked badly when it came time to pay.
now, only at startup/warmup for about the first couple minutes, it is smoking slightly. it is not barreling out smoke but it is enough to notice it doing it and it has a gas smell to it. any ideas? should i run 93 octane gas a couple tanks or add some sea foam or what?? thanks all

sounds like the valve seats are a little bad if it only does it at start up. i woulndt worry too much about it as long as you keep an eye on the oil level. putting higher octang in wont make any differnce. just my .02

So are you back to a stock paper air filter now?. How did you know your trouble was from the fine dust particle getting through?.......I'am just wondering, I had many heated forums about this topic,..........................now you just given me proof!!!!..........Caper..........

I'm guessing this smoke is only there after you have left the machine sit awhile (hours, days), and not if you start the quad back up after only a few minutes. I agree with Stendori... normally this indicates the valve seats (intake/exhaust valves) are letting the oil in that has settled after the machine is turned off. The valve seals/seats keep this oil out of the firing chamber. After starting, the oil is burned off, and the rest of the oil is circulating and does not generally enter the firing chamber unless the valve seals are totally gone.
It may seem like a lot of smoke in the exhaust, but it really doesn't take much oil to produce a decent amount of smoke. Just check your oil level more often than normal. The valve seats themselves are really inexpensive if it becomes a nuissance (labor would be by far the expensive part unless you do the work yourself). Just my 1.5 cents.

caper, the reason i said the top end being replaced because of the filter is because my mechanic that repaired it explained it to me. it wasn't that the UNI filter was bad or anything like that, it was negligence on my part. i was not properly oiling it like i needed to. after that, he gave me UNI filter oil and i keep it soaked when riding. another reason was i used to ride at a sand quarry where it was always dusty. so the dust came on into the engine through the filter that was not oiled.
i also talked to the mechanic today on the smoking, he said try draining the gas out and run the engine completely dry, then refill with new gas. said there might be some water in the gas causing this, thought i would share with you all.
