Default Opinion on 400 Explorer (2000 yr.) Price value

Have an opportunity to purchases a very well cared for Polaris 400 Explorer 2000 model, 4X4. While NADA says about $ 2,300, this one is for $ 3,000 because of its condition 130 hrs and about 325 miles and garage kept.

I know it is a 2 stroke engine. If anyone has experience with this model, would you let me know if you think this is a fair deal. And any things to be watchful for at time of purchase or ownership.

It is for general riding on vacations for my teenage son 16yrs.

thank you.

I have a buddy with one that gave $2300 for it about 2 years ago. there's also one at my local dealer and they want $2800 for it. if its in as good a shape as you described, I'd say the price is reasonable. I've been working on my buddy's and there are a couple of things to look for. first thing to do is to check the tie rod ends (the ones by the wheels) the factory ones are junk and wear out quick. polaris doesn't even make the kind that was on it from the factory anymore. get some updated ones. also check the pull start cover. some how my buddys got cracked where the starter is and a piece ended up going into the cover and breaking the arm for the pull start off and also jamming the starter gear. it was an easy fix but also cost $220 for a new cover. other than that, we've had no problems out of it and it gets ridden pretty hard. it does have quite a bit of power (it will about keep up with my sportsman 700 twin). since it is a 2 stroke, its somewhat high strung but still works great as a trail rider. just be sure to bring along a couple of spare plugs on your rides and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
