New '07 800 Deluxe Today!
#1
So I traded my 500 because I have had issues with engine missing after warm-up. The dealer couldnt figure it out and I ride in the mountains and cannot afford to have a machine that I'm not comfortable with its reliability ... so I traded. I took a big hit $$$ but think I got a pretty good price considering.
I sure hope that my new 800 wont have the same problem and also hopefully I wont have to deal with the "melting plastic" problem. I'm prepared to wrap the pipe where it passes directly under the seat next to the plastic side panel by my right leg if need be. Summit Racing sells a huge selection of wraps and tapes and claims to block 98% of the exhaust heat with some of their products.
On a test ride, I was certainly impressed with the power and love the sound of the big bore. I hate to think of another break-in period but with elk hunting season coming in 3 weeks, the last thing I need is to be stranded 5 miles back with an elk down and no way out other than foot.
I'm on vacation for the next month atleast so have plenty of time to get it broke in before making it work. Wish me luck!

I am interested in any information you have for wrapping the exhaust pipe. I have an '07 800 and it gets very hot. I can't get any resolution from Sportsman so greatly interested in your experience. Thanks.

Congratulations on your new ride. You will love it.
I wouldn't worry about the break in. I rode mine as hard as I could to break it in. I didn't even let it idle prior to break in. This technique worked for me.

I have to disagree on the break in period. I have broken in dozens of engines of all different types. 500 hp boat racing engines, 1000 cc 230 hp snowmobile engines, atv's, motorcycles and over a dozen other boat engines. The more careful you are, the better your engine will be. If you break it in with care it will produce more horsepower and last you a longer time. Whatever the dealer tells me to do, I at least double it. An oil change right after the dealer recommended break in period is important too.

Yes I was wondering how harsh "trading"in wld be if I so wanted to if you dont mind giving the dollar amounts and such that wld be great.</end quote></div>
I talked them down to $7200 for the SP800 and paid $2200 difference. I originally paid $6200 for my SP500. Like I said, I took a big hit but really hope that I get a dependable good running bike this time. Time will tell.

The product I am looking at is a thermal wrap made by Thermo-Tec. I plan to buy it from Summit Racing.
