Brand new 700 EFI.....Funny Noise....Help!!
#1
Hi all. I just brought home my new 2007 Sportsman 700 EFI. It's brand new...zero miles. Here are the symptoms of my noise..... First, when the machine is in park, and the engine is off, if I grab the rear rack, and repeatedly shove forward, and pull backwards, rocking the machine back and forth, I hear a rather sharp matallic clunking sound comming from the transmission. I can duplicate the same sound by reaching down and grabbing the rear driveshaft, right where it connects to the transmission, and twisting it back and forth. It doesn't rotate hardly at all, but it makes the same sharp mattaic clunk when twisted in either direction. It sounds like something is loose inside the transmission. Okay, now when I'm riding, the transmission seems to function perfectly...nice smooth power when accelerating. But if I accelerate, then let right off the throttle, it will make the exact same clunk as discribed above. If I alternately accelerate and let off, it will make the noise each time the driveshaft loads up and unloads. Just as if there is something loose in the tranny. Also, when I'm just coasting down a trail, with the ATV coasting, and just a little throttle on, ands the engine and the ATV are kind of spinning at the same speed, with no load on the drive lines, it will intermittenly make the clunking sound. I guess I just want to know if anyone else's 700EFI made this noise when it was brand new??? Is it normal?? Am I being overly cautious? Thanks to all who respond.

welcome to the drive line slop noise. this is normal on most all or them. its the back lash noise your hearing. not to worry as my 800 does itand has since new.

I just bought an '07 800 yesterday and I noticed the same noise. I too was wondering if it was normal or not so am interested in hearing the responses. Everything works fine but the when anything mechanical makes a noise like this I have a hard time understanding how it can last very long. A certain amount of "backlash" is a required spacing on any final drive vehicle but mine sounds a slight bit excessive. Time will tell, I'm just starting the break in now.
