450 R idle / sprocket size
#1
I am checking out a 450r that I have a questions on. I need to adjust the idle and without the owners or shop manual not sure where its at. Also The front sprocket has 13 teeth and was hoping I could drop to a 12 tooth on it.

On my 04 the idle adjustment is a very prominent black plastic **** on the left side of the carb. Not sure if the 06-08 are different or not???
A 12 will be real hard on your chain. It is so small that it almost kinks it...chain life does suffer. Maybe go bigger in back if you are looking to gear down?

Did not notice a black **** on left side .Its a 2006 model. I always changed the front sprocket on my 89 250 R and dropped a tooth but this 450 has a 13 tooth and it needs geared down for my trails here in Indiana. This already has the hrc kit installed and it seems plenty powerful .It just seems to stall occasionaly and gets aggravating at times. Trying to get this prepped for trip to Glamis in january. Already have the paddles and itching to ride this 450r in the sand!

turn your idle up to a faster rpm but not reving out, i did it on mine and havent stalled out since. and ur in trails and when your pumping the gas and bouncing around it can load up the float bowl, i think thats why they stall and thats how turning up the idle could help to use up little extra gas in the carb. Just my thoughts but it worked for me

Dropping a tooth on the front sprocket helps alot, but since your 450R comes stock with a 14 tooth on the front, someone has already dropped 1 tooth so if you drop another your chain will suffer. The HRC kit or an aftermarket exhaust opens your exhaust up a bit and helps tremendously on the 450R's when it comes to stalling at low speeds.

Well.. I just bought a 07 450r and It started hard and stalled for like the first two days I had it...During the break in time. But it idles and runs like a champ... even on the trails...Yesterday it didnt stalll once in about 2.5 hrs of riding. Not sure if the new ones are alot different than a couple years ago?
