What kind of riding are you going to do- Trail, Sand, Mud, etc. What other things will it be used for - work, hunting, just for play. There are so many models to choose from. Check the reviews from test rides and shoot outs.

If you're looking for a new machine, the Honda Rancher 420 is a tough utility quad which has proven to be excellent for trail riding as well. It is available in 2wd, or selectable 2wd/4wd, and can be had with either an electric shift 5 speed or 5 speed manual transmission.

There are photos and more information on my page here, camera icon, or have a look at this link to a previous thread Lovin' the new rancher where a number of owners have weighed in.

"Trail riding" doesn't tell us much! A "trail" in Louisiana might be a total mud bog, while a "trail" in So. Calif. would be something different altogether!

Do you need 4wd, high ground clearance, or racks to carry things. If so, then you need a utility. If so, I highly recommend the Honda Rancher 420!

If you don't need those things, then you are way way ahead getting a sport quad. Sport quads are hundreds of pounds lighter, way more stable (safer!), have a real honest to God manual transmission, and are just plain way more fun! I highly recommend the Honda 400EX or maybe the Suzuki Z400 in this class!

Well in that case i think i might need a sport quad. The trail that i would be riding in arnt that muddy, and if they are there is always a way around it. So yea a sport quad would work. I was thinking about getting a warrior thou. Any objections?

Absolutely no! I rode a Warrior for years, and while it wasn't a bad machine considering what was available in the 90's, it is pathetic by today's standards. They handle heavy, the engine is absolutely ancient (but reliable), the rear suspension linkage just isn't right, the ergonomics aren't great....I could go on and on......

I was never so happy as the day in 99 when I got rid of the Warrior and got a nice new 400EX!

Recons right on this one. He may suggest the rancher for way too many applications but, he nailed it on the head here. If you get a warrior then ride one of your buddies machines, be it a raptor, 400 ex, 300 ex, z400, actually ANY "sport" quad you will be sorely disappointed in the performance of the warrior. As far as I'm concerned the warrior is yamaha's biggest screw up.
