2004 1/2 500 oil change
#1
I purchased this used machine a few months ago and changed all the fluids last night. The question concerns the priming of the oil pump. I followed the instructions but didn't hear the "hiss" of pressure I was supposed to hear. Before doing this the sump was way over full. After I did the procedure a couple of more times, the oil level is reading full-where its supposed to be. Am I correct in assuming that the pump is primed?

I just never did Polaris fussy why of changing oil. All I do is drain oil out of oil tank, once it stops I run motor for a few seconds and a additional cup of oil pours out of the oil tank. I replace oil tank drain plug than remover oil filter, I pour oil in the new oil filter (half full) and spin it on,than I start it up and let it circulate. Done.
I have done this on my dads 97 SP500 (He does nothing) since new that was 7000 miles ago. I had my Sportsman for a year and have done 3 oil changes this way so far.

Make sure you have found the slit in the tube and placed the clamps properly. If so, it is probably primed if you followed the instructions--- i rarely heard a hiss when I had a 500 -- you could do it again just to check. Essentially, it is bleeding the air from the lines to the engine. If your engine is knocking, it is not getting oil-- so keep your ears open for this.
