Default My Experiences with TRX 300 Brakes

I know Honda made this model from 1988-2000 with only minor changes. They are all basically identical with almost 100% parts interchange(ask me if you need to know what doesn't swap)
I've owned two TRX 300 ATV's. I bought a new one in 1994 and got every cent I paid for it back out in use before I swapped it for a boat
I got my hands on a 1988 4x4 model(TRX300FW) a few months back and have been restoring it...It's about 80% good as new at this point...

My question is related to what others may have experienced with the rear brakes.

I put rear brakes on the 1994 model and within VERY short order they we beyond the adjustment range again and needed a new drum.
This new one has the exact same issue. I put new shoes on it - and now like a month later I have basically adjust the brake/arm beyond it's intended range to get any brakes. I also put brand new Motion-Pro brake cables on it so I doubt it's cable stretch.

Is this par-for-the-course with this model honda or am I missing something. It seems like a drum should last at least througha couple of sets of shoes....Those drums are like $100+ ea.
