Default Sportsman Loose Axle

Hey Everyone,

My friends Sportsman 600 has a loose left axle. It is loose where it splines into the diff. It can wiggle back a forth and in and out more than it should.

Anyone know what this is? A bad axle?

Thanks,

No not yet. Wow been a few years since I've been on here, most of those toys aren't even mine anymore I just realized.

Anyways, anyone ever seen this before? He is bringing it over tomorow so I would like to know what I am going to need to replace or do??

your talking about the alxe hub sliding in and out of the spined rear end? it should be able to move much and none up and down i do beleave. it so then i would say bad bearings.

Im talking about the end of the axle that goes into the diff or drive case in the center.
It does have a bad wheel bearing but last time I replaced the boot the bearing had little play and the axle was loose. When we drove it and checked it was tight though but then loose sometimes. It is not right either way. Is it a bad axle or the other end in the diff? Or maybe something else?

see if it has the little clip on that end of the axle, if not, then put that clip on, if so, then i would say try putting a new axle on before tearing apart the gearcase

I am almost positive the clip was on last time I installed.
Does anybody have a manual with the spline wear specs? I do not want to go replacing parts before I am sure since it is not mine. I dont believe I saw any abnormal wear marks/patterns/signs last time. Sorry do not have the quad yet to see right now.

well if we've talking about the cv joint end that slides into the rear end hosuing spline, there would be no reason for it to be or get worn out as it doesnt move except for taking it apart. if the "c" clip wasnt on yes it would move in and out and maybe even fall out if the bike was extended. but as far as moving up and down it shouldnt move at all. i know i read on the front end you have to completely take it apart to repace bearings. still not sure if thats what your referong to but go look at a parts break down on itand you'll see what your looking for i think.

The inner cv joint on all 4 coners of both of my sportsmans wobble around a lot. Not sure if they move in/out or not. The differentials don't leak at all, and I haven't had any problems with them after a couple thousand miles. Maybe a few other people could check their's and report back.
