All machines have strengths and weaknesses. You need to try to figure out what you want to do with the machine and what things are important (plowing, trail riding, racing, comfort, power, storage, nimbleness - whatever). Then find the quad that seems to fit your needs to its' strengths.
Then understand that every manufacturer makes a great quad, and every manufacturer has had problems. There are many vocal supporters and many - usually even more vocal people that have had problems (usually they are justified, but some just don't take care of their equipment).
I would suggest doing some thinking about what you want to use it for and then read a lot. Ask questions on this and other forums (the more specific the question you can ask the better the info you'll usually receive.) Try not to take any one persons advice as gospel. Everyone has different experience. Try to get an overall feeling for what each machine excells. - Then get the Sportsman 'cause its the best
Good luck.

The sportsman is the one i like. Iwent to the dealer and talked. But he was saying good stuff about other brands and the polaris hes like they are ok and then he talks about others. My guess is they make less money off the polaris.

I like the look, sound, color. My neighbors all have polaris. The one has a 03 sportsman 500 and its awesome. I might hunt, plow trail and ride in my field. I love polaris green.

i have an 08 800 stealth and i love it. it is a little on the heavy side.
positives:
the awd drive system is great, push a button and your done. all 4 wheels spin.
comfortable ride. i like it better than my friends grizzly 700 (though the power steering of the grizzly is nice)
looks, i love the steath black, the aluminum wheels with gray in them.
power, the 800 is pretty great on power though the can ams will out run them easily.
front storage compartment
dislikes
weight
gas mileage
price
thats it so far but have only put 30 miles on this one (had an 05 700)
i love the ride of the sportsmans, my friend owns a 2000 500 and hasnt had any problems with it other than the stupid stuff he does to it.
if i didnt have a friend who works at the polaris shop, i might have gone with a grizzly 700.
if you have the oppertunity, try and ride a couple, that is the best thing to do.
hope you have good luck finding an atv
