4X6 TRAILER
#1
Has anyone used a 4x6 trailer to haul there quad? I have an Explorer 400 and the dimensions in the manual are 4 feet wide and 6'8" long. The trailer has sides on it so it sounds like it might not make it. The quad and the trailer are 150 miles apart. Not sure where they measure from. Any help would be great.

According to Polaris's latest catalog, your Explorer and my Sportsman500 are the same length, 81" or 6' 9". I haul mine in the back of my full size Chevy truck, with an 8' bed. Just enough room for the bike and some camping gear.
So don't go with a 4 x 6 trailer. A 4 x 8 would be much better.

There is an old saying in looking at trailers. Carefully measure exactly what you need and then go one foot wider and two feet longer.You can always fill up extra space, but any kind of "hang over" is bad news. IMHO a 5' X 8' should be the minimum to serve one quad.

My neighbor hauled his 86, honda 250 4 wheeler in a trailer about that size with no problems. It was a trailer kit that he bought at a farm suply store, he had to put the plywood deck and sides on it himself. I know the bed was 4 feet wide, it might have been longer than 6 feet long. I would go measure it for exact size but he sold it and bought a 2 place trailer when he bought a 2nd quad.

I can fit my sportsman in the back of my short bed (4'x6.5')GMC Sierra and close the tailgate, but I haul both the Sportsmans with a Triton Side-Loading ATV Trailer. It is the best trailer I have found and they offer a bunch of different ones;

Don't make the mistake I made. I tried to save some money and buy the smallest size trailer possible to haul my 2 quads. I ended up losing one over the side when it scooted about an inch going around a sharp bend in the road. Luckily a safety strap stopped it about an inch from going nose first into the pavement. I realized a cheap or overloaded trailer can be very dangerous. A 4X6 might work but it would be tight, I wouldn't take the chance myself.

After reading the replies to your post I went back to edit my original post and as Hiofcer mention the 5' x 8' would be ideal and as small as You should go. Other sizes will work, but this is an addictive pass time and you will pick up baggage. You can also look for a two place snowmobile trailer. There ought to some good used ones available in Good Old Minnesota.( I used to live there and still have family there). The two place snowmobile trailer could possibly hold a second atv. As you look at the bottom of most postings having more than one quad is an eventuality.

I'd be happy to sell you my 5 x 8 so I can buy a two place, or more likely a 4 place. Let me know if you'd like pictures. 5x8 is great for one quad, but too small for two. If you want to ride with your buddies, you may want to go for a 6x10 right away so you can haul 2. Let me know if you'd like more detail about mine. I can deliver to brooklyn Park, MN.
